Getting On Something Innovative and Positive or “GOSIP” was formed in 2007 by 3 teachers and 1 parent coordinator as a after-school program for a emerging elementary and middle school in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. GOSIP’s aim and focus lies in providing inner-city youth a vehicle for expression through 5 elements.
- Hip-Hop
- Community Art
- Dance
- Step
- Videography
Since 2007, GOSIP has served as a after-school provider for more than 100 kids. Each element of GOSIP is taught and managed by a mentor that has expertise in that particular subject. As of June 2009, GOSIP released a 30-minute documentary detailing the experience of various kids within the program; in addition, GOSIP also released a full-length Hip-Hop album by the “90z Babiez,” a group formed by three teenagers (2 boys and 1 girl) under the Hip-Hop element. As of August 2009, the self-titled album has been downloaded by more than 100 people since its release.
GOSIP is currently focusing on creating awareness about the students involved within the program and the great accomplisments inner-city youth has created. Since its creation, GOSIP has been financially self-reliant, receiving no public or private funding.
